Walter L Johnson

November 17, 1938 — March 2, 2025

Alexandria

Walter L. “Waldo” Johnson, age 86, a beloved lifelong resident of Alexandria, gracefully departed from this life to meet his Lord and Savior on March 2, 2025, at Northview Health and Living in Anderson after a courageous battle with illness.

Born on November 11, 1938, Walter was the cherished son of Ernest and Geraldine (Hupp) Johnson. His legacy is deeply woven into the fabric of Alexandria, where he spent both his life and his heart. After dedicating 30 years of unwavering service to General Motors, Walter retired in 1995, leaving behind a commendable career.

Walter was a devoted member of the Christian Congregation Church in Alexandria, where his spirit shone brightly in his contributions, particularly in making and serving delicious Chicken Noodle dinners for the community he adored. He had a passion for watching classic films, which brought him endless joy and nostalgia.

A familiar face at the Alexandria Library, Walter brightened the days of those around him with daily visits to read the newspapers and share friendly conversations, especially with his dear friends Terri, JoJo, and Bill. Known for his playful spirit, Walter had a mischievous side and delighted in sending cards signed with the names of famous people or playfully placing magazines under the windshield wipers of unsuspecting friends. It took a while, but eventually, everyone caught on to his antics, which became a source of laughter and fond memories.

Leaving behind a treasure trove of cherished moments are his sister, Vickie (Wendell) Zirkle; his special friends, Brian and Angel Lasher;  two special children in his life, Paizley and Paighton Foster; his church family; and numerous cousins. Walter's kindness and joyful personality touched many lives, and he will be deeply missed.

He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Ernest and Geraldine Johnson.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Walter’s life at a graveside service on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. in Park View Cemetery, 1101 S Park Ave., Alexandria, with Rev. Kevin Young officiating. Interment will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial gifts be directed to the Christian Congregation Church, 11015 N 300 E, Alexandria, IN 46001, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

During this difficult time, Bud and Susan Whetsel have the honor of caring for Walter and supporting the Johnson family as they navigate their loss. Walter’s warm spirit and the laughter he inspired will forever be remembered in the hearts of all who knew him.
