Martha J. Thomas. 92 of Alexandria died Sept. 10, 2013 at her residence while in the company of her daughter, Kathy Graham and caretaker, Kelly Jarrell after an extended illness.
Martha was born in Fowler, IN on May 9, 1921 and was the daughter of Fred and Mae (Dagger) Johnson. On Oct. 12, 1941 she married Thomas Thomas, Jr. who preceded her in death on May 23, 2003.
Martha attended Ball State University where she was first chair Violinist with the university’s orchestra. She a member of the Art Circle and was a faithful member of the Church of St. Mary’s, Alexandria where she served as church organist for over 50 years. For several years she taught at St. Mary’s School where every year she would read her students Tom Sawyer.
Martha always enjoyed spending time with her group of eight going to dinner and square dancing.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Kathy Graham, Bellefonte, PA and her son, Thomas (Tommy) Thomas III of Chicago, IL. Two grandchildren, Jeremy (Trisha) Graham and Jennifer (Chris) Engeland, great-grandchildren, Maddox A. Graham, Margaret S. Choe and Emily M Choe.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Thomas Thomas, three sisters, Margret Furnace, Dorothy Huggins and Patsy McAdams.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, Sept. 16, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in the Church of St. Mary’s, 820 W Madison, Alexandria with Fr. Paul Cochran as Celebrant. Burial will follow in Park View Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to the St. Mary’s School or Building Fund.
