Martha Sue “Marty” Gordon, 76 died Friday, Oct 6, 2023, after a sudden illness at Community Hospital, Anderson.
She was born Aug. 1, 1947, in Niles, MI to Louise and Dee Dee Garmon who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her brother Dwight and sister-in-law Lee, as well as by her in-laws, Martha and Robert Gordon.
Martha is survived by her husband, James Gordon, daughters, Lara (Paul) Latshaw, Jennifer Jaqua and Molly (Robert) Schlenkerman, as well as her honorary son, Shane (Jenny) Bish. She is also survived by her sister Mary Lou (Fred) Bohl, her niece, Rachalle Waldron and nephew, Chrisopher Waldron.
Martha earned her Bachelor’s and Masters Degree from Ball State University where she studied English and Education. She started and ended her career as an English teacher at the Alexandria-Monroe High School after teaching for 36 years retiring in 2005. She loved being an educator. She was a favorite teacher among many of her students and truly loved teaching English, Creative Writing and Literature.
Martha was well known around Alexandria for her beautiful flowers garden she maintained for many years at her home and was proud of her lush flower beds. She was an avid reader and accomplished piano player, having spent accompanying the congregations in song at several local churches. She also enjoyed part-time sales jobs at Kohls Department Store and at J.C. Penny’s in Anderson for several years.
In 2009, she moved to St. Petersburg, FL to be closer to her children but returned to Alexandria in 2017.
She will be remembered as an amazing mother, an incredible friend and beloved wife who will truly be missed.
The family has no public services planned at this time. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date.
