Lewis Blanton

Lewis Ray Blanton, age 72, of Peoria, AZ (formerly of Elwood, IN) passed away on August 21, 2017 after an extended illness.
He was born in Elwood on March 6, 1945 to the late Jesse and Olive (Storer) Blanton.
Lew joined the US Navy at the age of 17, and also served in the National Guard for over 20 years. One of his proudest moments while serving in the military was providing service to President John F Kennedy at Camp David. He was employed at Excello Corporation, Central Indiana Gas Company, Bronnenberg Children's Home (Director), Madison County Probation Office, Red Gold, Inc, and Arizona State University.
He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Moose, Eagles, Elks, and where he held several offices over the years. He was very proud of holding the position of Master Mason at the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed reading, history, and southwest culture. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed hunting with his cousins in Kentucky.
He graduated from Wendell L Wilkie High School (Elwood ) in 1962 and Anderson College in 1977 with an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice.
He was married to Marcena Benson for 37 years. He married his second wife, Dodi Peart in 2006. He married his current wife Nita Summers in 2009.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a stepsister Ruth Ann Storer, and his second wife.
He is survived by his current wife, brother David (Brenda) Blanton (Elwood), his daughters Debra Blanton (Lehi, UT), Jennifer (Jeff) Bryan, and Cheryl Cabrera both of Alexandria, grandchildren Bridget Thompson, Ariana Cabrera, Carlos Cabrera, and great grandson Layne Snyder, all of Alexandria. He was also survived by several loved ones including nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Whetsel Funeral Service, Alexandria. A Prayer Service will be conducted at 2:45 p.m. to conclude the gathering. A funeral dinner will be held following the gathering at the Monroe Twp. Community Room from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the funeral home for the care of the Blanton family.
