Jimmie D. Cummins, Sr., 89 of Alexandria died Sunday, Mar. 20, 2016 in the Summitville Convalescent Care after an extended illness.
Jimmie was born in Anderson, IN on Aug. 2, 1926 and was the son of Elmer and Marjorie (Gibson) Cummins. On Aug. 28, 1946 he married Barbara R. (Dickey) Cummins.
Jimmie proudly served his country during WWII in the United States Navy. He was a member of the Alexander Bright Post 87 of the American Legion, Eagles Lodge Aries 1771 and was an avid bowler.
Jimmie was proud of his family’s military history and was instrumental in having a memorial place on the Veterans Memorial in the IOOF Cemetery in memory of his uncle Andrew Cummins the first Medal of Honor receipt ant in Madison Co.
He was retired from Delco Remy, Anderson and was the Grounds Keeper at the Alexandria Conservation Club for over 10 years.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 69 years, Barbara, sons, Jimmie D. (Kathy) Cummins. Jr., Robert (Michelle) Cummins, daughters, Connie (Jerry) Ault and Sharon K Cummins. Special friends, Bob Armstrong and Ben and Linda Cummins. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Judy Smith.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Mar. 24, 2016 at 1:30 pm in Whetsel Funeral Service, Alexandria with Rev. Dennis Roberts officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, Mar. 23, 2016 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A private committal service will be held at a later date in Park View Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Wounded Warriors Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675 or in care of the funeral home.
