Jack Fredrick Purkey, 92, of Summitville died Monday, March 23, 2015 in Community Hospital, Anderson after an extended illness.
Jack was born in the Clarksville area of Hamilton Co. on Dec. 21, 1922 and was the son of Shirl B. and Gladis Brown Purkey. He was a graduate of Noblesville High School, Class of 1940. On Aug. 23, 1946 he married Marilyn R. (Acton) Purkey.
Jack was a veteran of WWII serving in the Pacific Theater in New Guiana with the U.S. Army. He retired from Delco Remy Anderson after 37 ½ years in June of 1979. He lived an active retirement life where he was a gentleman farmer for several years. He attended the Back Creek Wesleyan Church.
Jack will be remembered as a loving and caring Husband, Dad and Grandfather who active in Little League and was a church leader.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Marilyn R. Purkey, a daughter, Janis E(Tom) Kingen of Indianapolis, three sons, Bruce (Veronica) Purkey of Rogers, AR., David K Purkey of Waskom, TX and Todd (Karen) Purkey of Summitville.; a sister, Betty “Joann” Stout. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Robyn Purkey Wassman, India C. Purkey White, Brian S Kingen, Justin Purkey, Marissa Purkey, Courtney N Purkey and Madison L Purkey and seven great-grandchildren.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Shirl “Bud” Purkey, Mark Purkey, Paul Purkey, sisters, Helen Purkey Beaver and Doris Purkey McVey.
Funeral services for Jack will be on Thursday, Mar. 26, 2015 at 11:00 am in Whetsel Funeral Service, 1503 S Park Ave, Alexandria with Rev. Benjamin Parker officiating. Burial will follow in Vinson Memorial Park Cemetery, Summitville. Military Honors provided by U.S. Army and VFW Post 5782. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, Mar. 25, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Thrusday.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials are made to Madison Co. Humane Soc., 2229 Crystal St., Anderson, IN 46012 or in care of the funeral home.
