Harold H. Hartley. 92 of Alexandria died Tuesday, January 27, 2015 in the Community Heart and Vascular Hospital, Indianapolis.
Harold was born in Alexandria on April 29, 1922 and was the son of Jerome F. and Martha J. (Knopp) Hartley. He was a graduate of Alexandria High School, Class of 1940 and attended Ball State University. On April 16, 1949 he married Phyllis Joanne (Young) Hartley in Summitville, IN.
Harold was a farmer and was employed by the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier, he retired in 1984.
Harold was a veteran of WWII serving with the United States Marines. While fighting in Guam his was wounded while saving another wounded Marine and was awarded a Purple Heart and an Honorable Service Metal.
Harold loved the outdoors, he was an avid fisherman, hunter and enjoyed boating. He enjoyed life with his wife Phyllis and for over thirty years he and Phyllis wintered in Florida.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years Phyllis Joanne Hartley and several nieces and nephews and cousins.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Thelma Lucille Henderson.
Funeral services will be Friday, January 30, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in Whetsel Funeral Service, 1503 S. Park Ave., Alexandria. Interment will follow in Park View Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials are made to the American Heart Association in care of the funeral home.
