Grace D. Blake, 91 of Alexandria passed away on Wednesday, January 28, 2015, after an extended illness at the Northview Care Center, Anderson. She was born on July 8, 1923 in Alexandria to Howard and Harriett (Tobey) Foley and resided all of her life in Madison County.
She graduated from Alexandria High School with class of 1941 and worked in the offices at both Johns Manville and Cox’x Supermarket before her marriage to Joe H. Blake in 1946. Grace then worked on the Blake family farm as she helped raise the Blake children. In later years, she was the office manager of Maplewood Animal Clinic in Muncie.
Grace was a longtime active member of the Alexandria Church of God where she taught Sunday school, served as Sunday School Superintendent, was a member of several church boards, and served as secretary of the church’s records. In her latter years, Grace attended the Madison Park Church of God and volunteer in the church’s offices. She was also active in various organizations through out the years, including Indiana Farm Bureau Assoc., Cunningham Elementary School PTA, and Purdue University’s Home Extension Town & Country Club where she served at one time, as the Madison County President.
As a young girl, her father, Howard Foley taught Grace to keep statistics for the John Manville baseball team which he managed. Because of this experience, Grace maintained a keen interest in baseball during her entire life. Yes she rooted for the Cubs.
Grace is survived by her sister, Pat Dyer Landes, niece, Tamra (Marlin) Gooding, nephews, David (Jayne) Dyer, Bob (Patty) Chapman, Eugene (Betty) Foley, and Gerald (Sally) Foley. Also surviving are step-Children, Rosemary (Blake) Williams, Wayne Blake, Joy Blake (John) Grose and step-son-in-law, Phil Levi. Also surviving are many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and several cousins of the Foley and Tobey families and their children.
Grace was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Joe H Blake, brothers, Obid (Irene) Foley and Jim (Rose) Foley; sister, Beulah Foley Chapman; brothers-in-law Gene Dyer and Bill Landes; step-son, Phil and step-daughter-in-law, Ruth Ann Blake; step-daughter, Janelyn Blake Levi,; daughter-in-law, Sue Brobst Blake; step-son-in-law, James E Williams and step granddaughter Marla Blake Crosier.
Grace’s family cannot adequately express appreciation to the entire staff of Community Northview Care Center. Their highly professional and heartfelt outreach provided the family with meaningful support during her residence there.
Funeral services for Grace will be Monday, Feb. 2, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in Whetsel Funeral Service, Alexandria with Rev. Tom Shuurman officiating. Burial will follow in Park View Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral on Monday from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the requests memorials be made to the Alexandria Church of God in care of the funeral home.
